Do teenagers in Sweden prefer to speak English to one another? When I visited there, I saw a group of school kids who looked around 14-16 speaking to each other, and they kept alternating between English and Swedish. Is this a normal phenomenon? I’m just asking because I’m very interested in the linguistics of younger generations.

Is this a normal phenomenon? I’m just asking because I’m very interested in the linguistics of younger generations. There the workplaces are quite international and you often get quite far with just speaking English. Though knowing Swedish definitely makes it easier to find a job I would say. When I worked for a truck manufacturer in Sweden I had quite some colleagues who only spoke English.
